Geophysical Survey – Magnetic
Magnetic Surveying measures variations in the Earth’s magnetic field generated by differences in sub-surface rock magnetic susceptability. Applications of magnetic surveys have a broad range of applications including geological, civil and archaeological.
Identifiable Features
The use of Magnetic Geophysical surveys is a widely used technique due to its speed of acquisition and lower cost. Magnetic Surveys can provide;
- Palaeochannels containing tertiary basalt can be identified, extent mapped and an estimate of thickness obtained.
- Delineate dyke, sill & massive intrusives.
- Large scale basement fracture and fault systems that alter the basin floor can be mapped.
- Smaller scale fracture and fault systems that cross magnetically inductive bodies, such as sills can be identified.
- Magnetically inductive ore bodies can be easily identified.
